Travels

I've been fortunate enough over the years to travel to some amazing parts of the world.  For a while my family lived in Dubai in the United Arab Emirates but I was far too young to remember any of our time there.  Later family holidays took us to New York, Florida and Switzerland.  Images from some of the places I've visited are shown here and I hope to add more over the coming years.

Dracula's Castle 1992, in the middle of the Carpathian Mountains on the border between the ancient regions of Transylvania and Wallachia, today in Romania.  Bram Stoker's character was based upon Prince Vlad Dracul (Dracul - meaning dragon or devil) who ruled Wallachia periodically between 1448 and 1476.  Well known for having his enemies impaled, some believe Prince Vlad also drank the blood of his victims.  Oh... and there's a snap of me, totally knackered, walking up a black ski run!  The scenery and history of Romania are stunning.... the skiing at Poiana Brasov was a bit on the icy side!!

Skiing in Borovets, Bulgaria in 1994.  Beautiful scenery as ever in the mountains and a ski guide who would pop a shot of some kind of spirit in your hot chocolate at the end of the day!!  I don't remember anyone refusing it though?!?!

Bali in Indonesia has to be one of the most beautiful places on Earth.  I've never been to a country before where the locals are so friendly and outgoing towards visitors.  The countryside is spectacular from the rice fields, volcanic sand beaches to the beautiful Coral Reefs.  Staying in Canggu in the South we hired a guide on most days to see the rest of the island.  Don't go to Bali if you're gonna stay by the hotel poolside... You have to explore the island!  Seeing some of the villages, temples and farms is like stepping back in time.  You have to haggle for almost everything you buy which is actually good fun though after a while you realise you're haggling over the equivalent of 50p for some thing that would cost you more than 20 times more in the UK!?!?  It really is an amazing place and I hope I get the chance to go back one day.

Skiing in Colorado in 1995.  Although I think this picture was taken on Copper Mountain we stayed at Breckenridge for a couple of weeks over Christmas.  The snow was the best I'd ever skied on, so much powder!  I lost a ski at one point and I must have spent a good half hour looking for it.  The atmosphere there at Christmas was wonderful, a real traditional & fun feel... and..... snow on Christmas day!!  :-)

I haven't been to many places in the Mediterranean but the Kassándra peninsula in Greece was a really nice place.  The people there were so friendly and the sea was crystal clear.  Watched a baby turtle trying to make its way to the sea, damn ants all over the beach though!!
